This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Tansy McNulty, the founder of 1 Million Madly Motivated Moms, or 1M4. McNulty left the corporate world to start 1M4 to end police violence by 2038. As I was bringing this Black child — a Black boy — into the world, I wanted to create a safer future for him. So I took those skills I learned in corporate America, and I applied them to what I do now with 1 Million Madly Motivated Moms, or 1M4. We don't tell the families what accountability looks like.

A firefighter was killed after a house in Virginia exploded Friday night, injuring 11 other people and scattering pieces of the home across the neighborhood, officials said. Firefighters arrived at the home in Sterling, Va., a suburb of Washington, about 7:40 p.m., said James Williams, the assistant chief of operations for Loudoun County Fire and Rescue. That was around the same time the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company reported on social media that it had sent fire engines to the house to investigate a gas leak. Soon after, the house exploded with firefighters inside, leaving people trapped and the area in “total devastation,” Mr. Williams said. Aerial footage of the scene from local news media showed smoke and debris covering the area and barely any signs of the demolished house.

A short time later, the house exploded and burst into flames, with multiple mayday calls coming from the firefighters trapped inside. Crews rushed in to try to rescue them from the debris that covered them, but one firefighter was killed and nine others were injured, Loudoun County Fire and Rescue officials said in a news release. Authorities did not say if they believe the propane tank leak caused the explosion. After firefighters found the leak in the underground propane tank, they requested a hazardous materials response team and additional units and safety officers. “This is believed to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing danger to the community,” Loudoun County Fire and Rescue said in a statement.

Following the passage of the first Enforcement Acts, written to protect the civil rights of the formerly enslaved, Congress created a bipartisan committee in 1871 to investigate reports of vigilante violence against freed people and their white allies in the states of the former Confederacy. The next year, the Joint Select Committee to Inquire into the Condition of Affairs in the Late Insurrectionary States released its report, a 13-volume collection of testimony from 600 witnesses, totaling more than 8,000 pages. The men and women who spoke to the committee attested to pervasive violence and intimidation. There were innumerable reports of whippings and beatings and killings. “Tom Roundtree, alias Black, a negro, murdered by a Ku-Klux mob of some fifty or sixty persons, who came to his house at night on the 3rd of December last, took him out, shot him, and cut his throat,” reads a typical entry in the volume devoted to Klan activity in South Carolina.

As he guided his giant harvester through a field in eastern England, James Williams still had another nine hours to go before finishing his 12-hour shift. Even then, other workers would continue through the night gathering a once ubiquitous vegetable that growers believe could be about to have a new moment in British life. The frozen pea, a humble staple of the country’s cuisine, may be on its way back. At least, that’s what Britain’s vegetable producers are striving for, as food prices spike and shoppers increasingly turn to the freezer cabinets in supermarkets to help keep weekly costs down. That, growers say, offers another opportunity for pea producers to restore the popularity of a product that was a staple of the 1970s, but which fell out of fashion as shoppers sought out farm-to-table produce like broccoli, peppers, avocados and other, more exotic, vegetables.

Mexican officials, who say they are pursuing various lines of inquiry, drew up a brief document summarizing the abduction of the Americans and biographical information on them. A Reuters review of South Carolina state records found that Woodard was convicted five times between 2007 and 2016 of drug crimes. The records also showed that Williams was in 2017 convicted for the manufacture and distribution of cocaine, though this was not mentioned in the Mexican document seen by Reuters. Reuters could not ascertain how a drug gang might have known Americans with drug convictions were arriving in Matamoros. Mexican officials have not yet specified the cause of death of Brown and Woodard.
Two of the four Americans kidnapped in Mexican are dead, while the other two were found alive. Relatives told CNN and ABC News the group traveled for one of them to get a tummy tuck procedure. Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal said the other two Americans were found alive in Tamaulipas, according to Latinus journalist Claudio Ochoa Huerta. Obrador confirmed at a press conference Monday that the group was abducted on March 3 in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, near the Rio Grande and southern US border with Brownsville, Texas. It was originally reported by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador that the group traveled to buy medication.

Including popular television series could help the Globes draw viewers this year. Gilles Mingasson / ABCThe nominees for best drama series are "Better Call Saul," "The Crown," "House of the Dragon," "Ozark" and "Severance."
An armed robber fatally shot a Northern California gas station clerk but won't be charged with murder — presumably because the gunman could claim self-defense, police said Wednesday. The DA's office on Thursday did not immediately explain its rationale against charging Jackson with murder. "I totally disagree with this," a tearful Matamoroz told NBC News. 'Why are we bending over backward to not charge an armed robber with the murder of an innocent store clerk who is protecting his premises?' Matamoroz was in the bathroom when Williams told her to stay put.
